A Performance Model of Disk Array Storage Systems

چکیده

The distribution of data across multiple, parallel disks, known as data striping, is a popular method of data storage as it allows for faster access. In this paper, we develop an analytical model that estimates the mean response time, throughput, and mean queue length of data requests when data striping storage techniques are used. Our model is shown via simulations to provide a good approximation of the actual access time under a variety of system and workload parameters designed to emulate real-world conditions. Since analytical results can be readily computed (as opposed to empirical and simulation models), our model should prove useful to le and storage managers in their decisions with regard to the optimal placement of data on storage devices.

An integrated performance model of disk arrays

All enterprise storage systems depend on disk arrays to satisfy their capacity, reliability, and availability requirements. Performance models of disk arrays are useful in understanding the behavior of these storage systems and predicting their performance. We extend prior disk array modeling work by developing an analytical disk array model that incorporates the effects of workload sequentiali...

Using MEMS-Based Storage in Disk Arrays

Current disk arrays, the basic building blocks of highperformance storage systems, are built around two memory technologies: magnetic disk drives, and non-volatile DRAM caches. Disk latencies are higher by six orders of magnitude than non-volatile DRAM access times, but cache costs over 1000 times more per byte. A new storage technology based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) will soon o...

A Comparison of Two Distributed Disk Systems

As the storage needs of computer applications and users become more sophisticated and increase beyond what can easily be satisfied by a few disk array controllers, aggregating and managing the many disparate components of the storage system become severe problems. Distributed disk systems, which manage collections of disks shared by or partitioned across multiple nodes, may offer a solution to ...

An Analytical Performance Model of Disk Arrays under Synchronous I/O Workloads

All server storage environments depend on disk arrays to satisfy their capacity, reliability, and availability requirements. In order to manage these storage systems efficiently, it is necessary to understand the behavior of disk arrays and predict their performance. We develop an analytical model that estimates mean performance measures of disk arrays under a synchronous I/O workload. Synchron...

A Modular, Analytical Throughput Model for Modern Disk Arrays

Enterprise storage systems depend on disk arrays for their capacity and availability needs. To design and maintain storage systems that efficiently satisfy evolving requirements, it is critical to be able to evaluate configuration alternatives without having to physically implement them. In this paper, we describe an analytical model to predict disk array throughput, based on a hierarchical dec...

Exploring the performance impact of stripe size on network attached storage systems

Network Attached Storage (NAS) integrates Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) subsystem that consists of multiple disk drives to aggregate storage capacity, I/O performance and reliability based on data striping and distribution. Traditionally, the stripe size is an important parameter that has a great influence on the RAID subsystem performance, whereas the performance impact has been ...
